For hundreds of years clambakes have widely existed. Originally introduced by the Native Americans in the New England area, they are now known the world over as New England Clambakes. With the spring season approaching, it's a great time to plan a clambake with close friends and family.
Originally, Native Americans would have their clambakes outside, cooking the food in a pit. The pit was dug, then lined with stones. On top if all went a layer of corn husks to keep the heat in, baking the food.

Our family has always hosted our annual Fourth of July celebration on the Saturday prior to the 4th of July. Our parties for July, the 4th have usually about 200 people more or less. Maybe not 200 all at once, but throughout the day, I can estimate we have no less than that number. One thing it's important to tell is that I don't suggest a clambake celebration unless you have at least about 40 people, since it would be it would be somehow wasteful. Provide you have 40 or more people, I think it's a good idea.
The food for last year's clambake celebration was provided by a catering company. The main attraction was the live lobster. Kids and adults enjoyed watching the entertaining performance of the chefs as they prepared and cooked the lobster right in front of them. The catering company also did a great job displaying the rest of the full menu items on rocks and seafood. In addition to the lobster, we were served clams, quahogs and mussels.
What we ordered was considered to be a "standard clambake" but they also had an option for a "New England clambake". Both were similarly priced, but I guess that the New England one had more local menu offerings for New England stuff. I was pleased with the one we ordered, but I cannot say anything about the New England style, because I haven't tried it (yet!)
We are very delighted to do a clambake celebration once again for the 4th of July party this year. Everything is already planned, and we just can't wait for July to come! It's such a great food that we didn't consider anything else to eat. But of course there will also be lots of beer and water balloon fights.
